3. Character Information II
Age/Appearance: About 36. Average build, about 5'8''. She has short brown hair that she usually wears down with her fringe pulled back, and grey-green eyes. She typically wears trousers, blouses, and blazers or jackets that are very signature 80s.
History: Alex Drake at Wiki
Personality: Alex's personality was hugely affected by her experiences in the 1980s. Although a relatively grounded individual, Alex's perception of all she has known about her world and the death of her parents was shaken to its limits.
Having a background in psychology, Alex is an extremely logical thinker. In earlier seasons, especially during in times of crisis or emotional distress, Alex would often suffer from clouded judgment, saying and alluding to things that might make complete sense to her, but to others, comes off as the ramblings of a raving lunatic. Since her return from 2008 to 1983, Alex's personality has seems to have evened, however; she is much more lucid than before, and more grounded in the reality that 1983 offers. Although she is still distinctly aware that she is misplaced, coming back from 2008 has seemed to channel her goals into a more coherent need to help the people she left behind, and with that, she has tended to better control her outbursts and occasional wayward personality. On the other hand, she still receives communications from 2008 and suffers from frequent hallucinations, including the haunting image of a dead copper with a mutilated face. She has a reached a point where she takes these momentary hallucinations in stride, as she has now spent almost three years living with constant reminders that the world around her is not quite right anymore.
It's also important to note that, like Sam, Alex's world in 1983 is significantly more “real” to her than the world of 2008. Although she briefly returned to her proper time at the end of series 2, her arrival back in 1983 and the feelings that came with it make her suspect that she never actually returned to 2008. But the feelings of reality that came with her return to 1983 have probably aided in helping her feel more stable and much more determined in her quest to find out what exactly has happened to her.
Alex is also stubborn, often to a fault, and considers herself in a higher educational class than those she worked with in the 1980s. She is often patronizing, although rarely deliberately, and she has no problem prodding at people to get her way when she is aware of an exposed weakness. As proud and professional as she is, Alex also has a fun streak and is willing to take chances. She is also, at times, extremely insecure about her place in the universe, and often turns to those she trusts in times of need to validate her.
She considers herself the CID den mother, often offering unsolicited advice when she feels it is needed. Over time, and as her comfort levels rise with her new team, she is more honest and open about her feelings towards her team. She genuinely cares about their well being, but her compassion is not strictly confined to her co-workers. Alex is more than willing to stick her neck out for anyone in need if she feels it will protect or assist them.
During her time in the 1980s, Alex developed a dependency on alcohol. No doubt encouraged by her co-workers, it became a coping mechanism. She was disturbed by her acceptance that this dream world was real, and drinking made her feel like she was still in a dream – in a way, it justified what she knew was logical instead of what she wanted to believe. As she adjusted to her life more in 1982, she became less dependent on drinking, although it is still a common escape mechanism for her.
Sexual Preferences/Orientation: Alex is very open about her sexuality – she's un-apologetically self-assured in her sexuality, and is not embarrassed to admit she enjoys sex. Although she's not quite as tarty as she (or her co-workers) make her out to be, she's definitely not opposed to the odd one-night-stand here and there, and she finds intimacy to be something important not only to a relationship, but to her general well-being.
Alex would certainly be monogamous, if she found someone stable to be in a relationship with. As a matter of fact, monogamy is probably something she would pride herself on; however, she's not looking or is interested in any long term relationships with anyone currently.
For the most part, there is nothing in canon to imply that she is anything but heterosexual. However, having been raised in a very contemporary manner, there is nothing that says she certainly wouldn't try – and probably enjoy – sex with other women. However, her preference lies with men, and any intimacy with a woman would probably require a solidly-based relationship and trust, as she wouldn't be looking at women for a fling here and there.
Powers: None, besides her sarcasm.
Reason for playing: Alex, for me, was literally love at first sight. I had never seen Life on Mars when I caught a few minutes of Ashes to Ashes on television, and after only a minute or two of watching Alex, I turned it off and marathon-ed both series from their inception with the sole goal of roleplaying her. That was a year ago, and I have been playing Alex regularly ever since. What called to me the most about her character was how different she was from most other characters I've seen on television – she balances a thin line between maternal and kick-ass, and it's a delicate balance that I've see far too many characters fall flat whilst attempting. She's also peculiarly complex; stubborn and desperate, confused yet determined, all the while with a heartbreaking honesty in her struggle to find out what her life has turned into. I love playing contradictory and haunted characters, and she was sort of a jackpot for endless confusion and character development. I just adore playing her.

First-Person: (written for
theatrical_muse) I've lost control.
Third-Person:
She had only been walking home.
By home she had meant the flat over Luigi's, but they were one in the same to her now. Somehow, her two worlds insisted on drifting into each other, scraping together like rough ships on dark water, and she was lost in the poetry of her mind until she realized the Met building was gone, and her usual short walk across the street was no longer short, nor was the street familiar.
As a matter of fact, she had no idea where she was, and this didn't look like any London she had ever known.
Alex took a deep breath, trying to fight down panic. “Calm down,” she commanded herself under her breath. “It's a hallucination. It'll be over and done with soon, just stay calm.”
And she waited, expecting the shadowy figure of the mutilated copper to appear, taunting her as so many visions had before. But he didn't, and nothing happened. The empty, dilapidated street stayed the same, and Alex's panic rose up in her throat when she came to the realization that this wasn't a hallucination at all. This was real, just as real as 1983.
She wrapped her blazer tightly around her and barreled down the street, desperate to find a way out, or find her way home. She did her best to stave off the fear as she passed the odd late night hooker and drug addict along the streets, sinister and lonely in the darkness. But the longer she walked, the more lost she felt, and the more desperate she became to make some sense of this sudden change in the world around her.
She walked for a very long time.
Third-Person #2: (written for
just_fck_me) Stake-outs, Alex mused, were intended for the specific purpose of observing, understanding, and reacting to a subject in order to better predict their intentions.
