Birds of a Feather: An Alex Drake & Sally Sparrow Fanmix

As requested by [livejournal.com profile] pi_sparrow, here's a Sally Sparrow/Alex Drake inspired EP. It takes place in our Time Will Crawl 'verse, in which Sally ends up in 1982 and ends up working for CID as a crime scene photographer and sharing Alex's flat.

All of the songs are, of course, from the 1980s, save the last song which was released in 1973.

The .rar file at the bottom includes all five songs and the album art.

A Girl In Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing) [Romeo Void]
There's no time for her to be afraid
So instead, she takes care of business
Keeps a cool head

Dancing in the Dark [Bruce Springsteen]
You can't start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark

Working 9 to 5 [Dolly Parton]
Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me in
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun [Cyndi Lauper]
When the working day is done
Girls-- they want to have fun

Kodachrome [Paul Simon]
I know they'd never match
My sweet imagination
And everything looks worse in black and white

This makes me crazy happy, bb. (Even if I'm tired and need to turn my head and squint a bit to see the stories behind some of the lyrics.)

Which reminds me I still need to post my Gwen/Sally mix I made you...

The nature of my mixes is I usually have at least one or two "squint sideways" songs, so that's not you, lol.

Ummm well, I think the Romeo Void, Dolly Parton and Cyndi Lauper are pretty straight forward... "Dancing in the Dark" is, for me, about realizing that disillusion that monotony of life and wanting someone more and looking for someone to share it with. So, for Alex and Sally, I felt like it sort of represented this moment when they might look at each other and say "Okay, this place sucks and we're stuck here, but instead of just surviving, let's live now, shall we?"

Kodachrome has two meanings; superficially, I put it on there because it's about a camera and Sally's a photographer, so. But I also really love the dichotomy of black and white versus colour, because the time periods in both LoM and A2A are so visually different in terms of the modern era always being these muted tones and the past being so much more colourful and lively. Basically, I think the song can be read as a simple "I love my camera cos it's flashy," or be seen more like the camera is a metaphor for actually being able to see how real everything is, and the fear of potentially losing that and going back to a life with a more narrow spectrum.

I do toooooo. Usually I end up with really complex AUs and storylines that involve craploads of headcanon. At least this one was very simple....
